As Extra 3015 East drifts out of the Stampede Tunnel in the autumn of 1916, engineer John Mills and fireman J.B. 'Bob' Stay get a breath of fresh air. The 0.2% descending grade abruptly changes to 2.2% descending at the tunnel mouth, and engineer Mills will have his hands full controlling the train with the old 'K' triple valves.
